METAL BRACES LOS ANGELES
Straight teeth are not simply a cosmetic matter. Having crooked teeth can make you more susceptible to dental problems, poor oral hygiene, and issues with oral function. Because of the potential long-term effects of misaligned teeth, leading Los Angeles orthodontist, Dr. Atoosa Nikaeen recommends that alignment problems be addressed with metal braces as early as possible.
WHAT ARE METAL BRACES?
Metal braces refer to an orthodontic appliance that we affix to the teeth. The system consists of high-grade stainless steel brackets and wires, which work together to move your teeth into the desired position. The small brackets are placed on the front of each individual tooth, and the wires are threaded through the brackets. The wires are custom shaped for each individual patient. Over time, the tension created by the wire-threading system repositions the teeth into their ideal configuration. Once it is all said and done, you should have a bright smile full of aligned teeth.
THE BENEFITS OF METAL BRACES
Clear aligners (Invisalign) are an excellent option for some patients. But not everybody may be an ideal candidate. For some individuals, particularly those with complex issues like severe overcrowding, braces are the best straightening option. They are effective, reliable, and proven to work. Dr. Nikaeen advises that patients consider metal braces if they have:
- Bridgework
- Gaps
- Bad bites
- Severe malocclusion (crooked or crowded teeth)
For younger patients, metal braces can mean a more colorful smile–literally. Today, patients can choose from an array of stylized colors to highlight their “smile-under-construction” in unique ways.
HOW METAL BRACES WORK
Many patients don’t quite understand the process of changing teeth positions. As such, it can be hard to realize why the installation involves so many visits to their dentists and a lot of adjustments, not to mention the cost. The treatment sounds simple, but it requires a complex set of steps and adjustments.
Braces consist of several elements:
- Brackets: Square-shaped elements fixed to the enamel of your teeth
- Archwires: Designed to fix all the brackets together
- Various Bands: Serving to hold different elements and to change their position during the treatment.
Before the treatment, your orthodontist makes a cast model from your teeth. This is used to create a unique braces design to treat your dental problem. We achieve alignment through pressure created mainly by archwires; they press your teeth so that they can move forward, backward, or sideways.
PROS AND CONS OF METAL BRACES
Similar to all other braces types available on today’s market, metal braces have advantages and disadvantages you need to consider.
PROS
- Metal braces are the strongest option on the market, which is difficult to damage when eating hard foods or brushing your teeth.
- They provide the fastest way of aligning your teeth, all other things being equal.
- Unlike transparent and white-colored brackets made of ceramic, metal is resistant to staining and allows drinking tea, coffee, or wine without any bad effects.
- Braces offer the most affordable treatment compared to brackets made of other materials.
CONS
- Metal braces are highly visible that can be rather embarrassing for many people both adults and teenagers.
- Some patients and orthodontists report that metal braces cause more discomfort including metallic off-flavor, cold sensation when they are worn in sub-zero environments and irritation of oral mucosa.
Discuss metal braces’ pros and cons with your dentist to make the right choice.
METAL BRACES FOR ADULTS
Although Dr. Nikaeen suggests early treatment, metal braces can be worn by adults. Today’s metal braces are smaller and more comfortable than ever before. In addition, braces can be more efficient at fixing imperfections.
Despite massive orthodontic hardware improvements, some adults still have reservations about wearing traditional metal braces, as they tend to be more concerned with aesthetics. Meanwhile, most of our younger patients, who are used to seeing their peers with braces, tend to adapt to braces quite easily. Dr. Nikaeen works closely with adult braces patients to design the best orthodontic care to fit their lifestyles.
SELF-LIGATING BRACES LOS ANGELES
Damon Braces or Self-ligating braces are designed to prevent undo force being placed on the specialized tissue surrounding and supporting teeth as they move your teeth into position.
Instead, the bare minimum of force should be used to stimulate the cellular activity required for tooth movement. The elastic bands used with traditional braces act like a bungee cord, placing friction and pressure on the teeth. This pressure also slows down the movement of the teeth.
WHO CAN WEAR DAMON BRACES?
Damon Braces are best suited for patients aged 13 to 60-plus. If you qualify for standard braces, you can also wear Damon Braces. Dr. Nikaeen will help you decide if these are the best braces for your needs.

DAMON BRACES AND BEAUTIFUL SMILES IN LESS TIME
In contrast, passive, self-ligating braces use special brackets that are nearly frictionless. Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, and Los Angeles orthodontist Dr. Atoosa Nikaeen offers the Damon Braces System, as well as the In-Ovation System. These braces have a small “trap door” structure, which closes over the arch wires stretching from bracket to bracket. These brackets allow the wire to move more freely and are smaller in appearance than standard braces.
Dr. Nikaeen uses a hook-like tool to open the trap doors, and then push them closed, once the arch wire is in place. There is almost no resistance between bracket and arch wire, so only a small wire is required to gently move teeth into place.
Damon Braces are designed to preserve the surrounding tissues by using very light force to move teeth into position. With the Damon Braces, treatment time is typically shorter than with traditional braces and you will experience exceptional results in less time.
The results include reduced discomfort, shorter treatment times, a terrific smile and improved facial structure. Adjustments will be required every 10 to 12 weeks, as opposed to every 6 to 8 weeks with traditional braces.
While self-ligating braces may be slightly more expensive, the reduction in return visits usually evens out the price. Most insurance companies now cover self-ligating braces.
DAMON BRACES PROS
- This type of braces allows reducing the number of visits to your orthodontist because there is no need to replace ligatures as often as with traditional braces.
- It also allows for a smaller size of brackets for some teeth (for example, on upper incisors).
- The design provides the minimum rubbing between the elements leading to significantly reduced time of active treatment.
- The absence of ligatures facilitates oral hygiene procedures greatly.
DAMON BRACES CONS
- The cost of Damon braces is higher than that of traditional metal braces.
- The brackets are slightly thicker due to the thickness of the hooks.
Ceramic Clear Braces LA
Ceramic Clear Braces are translucent (as opposed to traditional metal brackets). This gives you a more inconspicuous, yet aesthetically pleasing appearance, as the color can be matched to your natural teeth. The technical advantages to ceramic braces and metal braces are similar. clear braces or ceramic braces are usually preferred by young adults since they provide a more natural tooth color that isn’t so noticeable. However, it should be noted that ceramic is not transparent, and the archwire connecting the ceramic brackets together will maintain the silver, metallic color. Since ceramic is abrasive to tooth enamel, if you have a deep bite, you might not be able to use clear braces technology on your lower teeth.HOW DO CLEAR BRACES WORK?
Many patients ask their dentists “How do clear braces work?”, assuming that their working principle is somehow different from that of traditional metal orthodontic appliances. In fact, this is the wrong assumption, since both types of braces work similar. The main principle of their action is creating a permanent pressure on teeth in order to change their position. While many people mistakenly believe that teeth are immovably fixed in their alveolar sockets, actually every alveolar process has a margin of movement, which is used by orthodontists. Both during dental eruption and under the physical impact of braces, an alveolar socket expands slightly and the tooth has the possibility to change its position under the pressure. From its loose side, the connective tissue quickly stretches and new bone cells are created to fill the free space. Due to this, your teeth can be moved and the bite and other defects can be corrected. This kind of physiological processes are observed throughout the life, and therefore, orthodontic problems can be cured at any age. Clear dental braces are mounted with a special adhesive to tooth enamel, so that they can hold firmly. Each element is glued to the center of a tooth and a particular element is designed for each type of teeth – there are specific elements for incisors, molars, etc. This is based on the fact that the elements feature certain slope angles to provide the correct movement of the tooth. However, the main work is performed not by braces, but by archways. They are designed to link all the braces together and to create the pressure that moves the teeth until they take up the position planned by your dentist.PROS AND CONS
Though working similar to usual metal brackets, clear ceramic braces have their own advantages and downsides due to the material and design.PROS
- aesthetic look thanks to the high invisibility;
- low degree of discomfort in the mouth cavity, since the oral mucosa is less irritated during wearing, as well as articulation is affected to a lesser degree;
- no metallic off-flavor and hypersensitivity reaction to the ceramics;
- lower price compared to transparent sapphire braces.
CONS
- prolonged duration of the treatment resulted from more significant rubbing between the large arch and brackets slots;
- lower resistance to mechanical damage;
- a tendency towards coloration;
- higher price when compared to metal and plastic braces.
