Los Angeles, CA – At Nikaeen Orthodontics, patients often wonder whether or not they should opt for braces only on either the upper or lower row of their teeth.
You may want to save money, or you believe that one row of your teeth does not need correction. You may be surprised to find out why many people choose to get both sets of braces instead of going for a single arch.
What Happens with Braces
If your teeth are straightened after having gaps, your teeth will naturally go backward.
If your teeth are straightened after being too close or crowded, your teeth will naturally want to go forward to create more space.
With braces or Invisalign, you are looking for a perfect balance:
- Teeth that are neither overcrowded nor overly spaced.
- An even bite, not a malocclusion (underbite or overbite)
- A smooth and gentle bite, evenly distributing pressure as you chew to prevent damage
For most cases, braces on only one set of teeth may correct that row of teeth, but the other row may be pushed backward or forwards to make room for the corrected teeth.
It’s like needing glasses and only getting one corrective lens. You may have one eye with better vision, but the eye with better vision unaided will eventually weaken while overcompensating for the other eye.
One Size Does Not Fit All
Your mouth is unique. You have a unique jaw size and a unique arch of teeth on top and bottom.
Because of this, you will need to have a consultation with your orthodontist.
Interested in One Set of Braces on Your Upper or Lower Teeth?
When making your final decision, remember the reason why you you want braces in the first place. With a straighter smile, you are getting more than a beautiful smile: you are promoting long-term healthy teeth, gums, and jaws.
Make sure your orthodontist has the same goals in mind as you, and together, you can decide what benefits your smile best in the long run.
